Finding Success Online with Common #VOSense

Jim Kennelly writes about finding success online and offers tips for staying motivated

Santa BhuddaEveryone wants to find success online. We don’t want to be bogged down in our inbox, distracted by endless auditions that drain mental and physical energy. We’d like to be genuinely happy about the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. So…

How can you wake up eager and full of energy to make progress in your voiceover life?
How can you find work online that matters to you?

At Realtime Casting we want to find or create extraordinary work in the routine online voice casting world. As a voice talent, you might think that this perspective is a privileged way of life, something available only to those who are successful or otherwise endowed with audition choices unavailable to you.

But no! This perspective is a prerequisite to a new way of life…
You start with this perspective and then you work toward creating the actual life. It’s not simple, not easy, and not always straightforward. But it’s always worth it! It’s the whole point! You begin with it and then you carry it forward. When new opportunities come your way, you evaluate them:

  • Would I want to do this if I didn’t have to?
  • Would I be excited about waking up and working on this?

If yes, great! If no, that’s what you need to escape from. Build your own reality. Decide for yourself what this reality looks like. No one is stopping you, and the next step is yours to take.

Here are a few of my #VOsense suggestions I have been posting on Twitter in 2014

  • “Always have a beginner’s mind. Approach every learning opportunity with enthusiasm.”
  • “Make opportunities happen by taking action. Remember, there is no luck, only being prepared for opportunity.”
  • “Work Hard. Talent will only get us so far. Then we must WORK.”

Remember this advice: When you think you’re working hard, there are many others who are succeeding in their lives by working just as hard, or harder than you. They’re putting in one more hour and raising the standards every day. Work hard when everyone else has stopped working. Work when no one is looking. Work when there is no end in sight.

Progress…not perfection
Stop beating yourself up for not being perfect and focus on small changes that make you 1% better every day. Avoid being negative or people with negative attitudes. There is enough negativity in the world. Be different and focus on the positive. You will fail and make lots of mistakes. Keep going. Let’s enjoy building this new voiceover experience.

Everything is going to be fine. It’s just going to take time.

May your career rise to a new level in 2015!

Happy Holidays!

  1. Great suggestions to everyone….even those that have been at it for years…..For many years was a Program Director and Group Operations Director in Radio… of the responsibilities was coaching talent…two pieces of advice I always gave was, some things only happen over time.IE;experience and perspective….and the other I think your article hit the nail on the head. The small but daily improvements….one of the ways of giving advice to Talent would be during a critic session finding examples of their best work (usually a couple of great breaks….the 1%) then have them only listen to those best examples as a reference point for improvement….make it better than your best yesterday…
