GM of Realtime Casting, Jim Kennelly, offers advice for voice actors during the summertime months
And the livin’ is easy
Auditions are jumpin’
And the bookings are high…”
Wouldn’t that be lovely!
The song “Summertime” is the best-known selection from the 1935 opera “Porgy and Bess”. George & Ira Gershwin also wrote, “I Got Plenty of Nuttin’”. No doubt, voice actors can relate to that tune from June to August. I have heard many people say how summertime is the perfect time to take a break, lay low, and get away from all the worries that come with voiceover career planning and management. At Realtime Casting, we like to think , “It Ain’t Necessarily So!”.
Summer and your voiceover career
At Realtime Casting we recommend you ask yourself these questions, before your mind goes on summer vacation:
- What are some proactive steps you can take during the summer to avoid falling out of your ordinary routine?
- Are there people you can talk to, research you can do, information you can gather to improve your career during this downtime?
- What career-related thoughts are coming to mind as you take a nice summer walk, or drive to a vacation destination?
Realtime Casting appeals to proactive voice talent. The top voice talent invest in themselves and their careers. They do this because they know that education is an ongoing process. They know the competition is always doing things to get better in less time, and with less effort.
In short, top voice talent never stop investing in the most powerful, effective and best business and marketing tool at their immediate disposal: themselves.
Accessibility during the summer
Realtime Casting makes your talent accessible. There are few people who will work hard, go out of their way, or be inconvenienced for the privilege of giving a union voice talent their hard-earned money. Realtime Casting makes it easy for producers to do business with you. As a proactive voice you must be able to provide new producers with what they want, when they want it, while never losing sight of quality.
Keep having the fun you are seeking this summer, but use the space to see what career directions emerge. You never know what new and exciting career options might present themselves! If you are away on vacation right now, take some time to absorb how your career is going so far. Then, think differently about what you are returning to. Getting away may be just the break in routine or yearly cycle you need to help you get out of that rut and recharge your career focus! 😀
